Can I drink coffee while breastfeeding?
Is caffeine safe while breasfeeding? And if so how much?
If anyone deserves a coffee it is you mama! But is it safe to consume caffeine while breastfeeding?
The short answer is yes!
According to the Australian breastfeeding Association only around 1% og caffeine consumed will enter your breastmilk. However you still need to be mindful of your consumption. The recommended daily intake for breastfeeding mamas is 200mg a day. This equivalates to around 2 cups of coffee, roughly half the amount of the recommended amount for a person not breastfeeding. Caffeine in the breastmilk will usually peak around 60 minutes after consumption.
It’s important to remember that its not just coffee that contains caffeine. Caffeine cane be found in other sources of food and drink such as teas, cocacola, chocolate, any products containing cocoa or cacaoa.
If you have a newborn they are more likely to be sensitive to caffeine compared to a 6+ month old, so it is important to observe your baby to ensure they don’t react if you choose to drink caffeine during the newborn days.
So yes, if you choose to you can absolutely enjoy a warm cup of coffee while breastfeeding, but its important to be mindful of your consumption, keep an eye out on bub to make sure they aren’t sensitive to it and enjoy in moderation.
